The Jewel of Cinque Terre
Arriving in Vernazza, we immediately understood why it’s often called the most picturesque village of Cinque Terre. The pastel-colored houses, built into the steep cliffs, cascaded down toward the small natural harbor, where boats bobbed gently on the turquoise Ligurian Sea. The scent of fresh seafood and salty ocean air filled the streets as we wandered through the charming alleyways, lined with cafés, gelaterias, and artisan shops.
Vernazza has a history that dates back to the 11th century, and it was once a strategic maritime hub of the Republic of Genoa. Walking along the main street, we passed the Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia, a 13th-century stone church that stands proudly by the harbor, its bell tower offering a striking silhouette against the sky. From there, we climbed up to Castello Doria, the remains of a medieval fortress built to defend Vernazza from pirates. The views from the tower were absolutely breathtaking, showcasing the entire coastline and the endless blue sea.
For adventure seekers, Vernazza is one of the best places to hike. The trail from Vernazza to Monterosso offers incredible panoramic views, with vineyards and olive groves lining the rugged cliffs. The hike is steep in places, but every turn rewarded you with a postcard-perfect vista. If hiking isn’t on the agenda, simply sitting by the harbor with a glass of local white wine, watching the waves and the village’s slow pace of life, is just as magical.
As the afternoon faded into golden hues, we found a spot at a waterfront trattoria, indulging in a plate of trofie al pesto and freshly caught anchovies, a local specialty. The sounds of laughter, clinking glasses, and waves lapping against the shore created the perfect atmosphere.

Though half a day is enough to explore Vernazza’s highlights, we could have easily spent an entire day soaking in its beauty. Whether hiking, savoring delicious food, or simply enjoying the unmatched coastal charm, Vernazza left us completely spellbound, proving why it’s one of Cinque Terre’s most beloved villages.
