A Tuscan Jewel of Wine and History
Arriving in Montepulciano, perched high on a ridge in southern Tuscany, we were immediately struck by its medieval beauty and stunning views over rolling vineyards. This Renaissance-era town, with roots dating back to Etruscan times, is best known for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a prestigious red wine that has been produced here for centuries. The town’s blend of history, culture, and wine made it a must-visit destination for us.

We began our exploration in the Piazza Grande, the heart of Montepulciano, surrounded by magnificent Renaissance palaces and the unfinished yet striking Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Climbing the Palazzo Comunale’s clock tower gave us a breathtaking view of the Tuscan countryside, a patchwork of vineyards, olive groves, and cypress-lined roads stretching to the horizon.

Walking through the town’s steep, winding streets felt like stepping back in time, with charming shops selling local crafts, cheeses, and wines at every turn.

A highlight of our visit was touring the underground wine cellars of historic wineries carved into the town’s foundations. We sampled the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a rich and elegant red made from Sangiovese grapes.

If you’re experiencing the grape for the first time the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano reveals aromas of ripe black cherries, plums, and dried violets, with a structured palate showcasing firm tannins, balanced acidity, and complex layers of spice, tobacco, and earthy undertones, leading to a long, elegant finish. We enjoyed learning about the centuries-old tradition of winemaking here. The bold flavors of the wine, paired with local pecorino cheese also made for an unforgettable tasting experience.

Beyond wine, we visited the breathtaking San Biagio Church, a stunning Renaissance masterpiece just outside the town walls. Set in a picturesque valley, this perfectly symmetrical travertine church felt like a peaceful retreat from the bustling town.

Staying at Precise Tale Poggio Alla Sala in Tuscany felt like a dream, where luxury met the charm of the Tuscan countryside. Nestled among rolling vineyards and olive groves, the hotel offered elegant suites with panoramic views, a serene spa, and an infinity pool overlooking the landscape. Mornings began with a gourmet breakfast featuring local delicacies, while evenings ended with fine wine and exquisite dining under the stars. The peaceful ambiance, impeccable service, and rich history of the estate made our stay an unforgettable experience of Tuscan indulgence.

How Much Time Do You Need?
To fully enjoy Montepulciano, a day trip is enough to explore the historic center, enjoy a wine tasting, and visit San Biagio. However, an overnight stay or 3 or 4 nights allows time to soak in the town’s enchanting atmosphere, dine in a traditional trattoria, and take a scenic walk through the surrounding vineyards. With its rich history, world-class wine, and breathtaking scenery, Montepulciano left us completely enchanted.
