Nestled in the heart of Bavaria, Germany, lies the picturesque town of Bad Tölz, a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Steeped in history, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, and adorned with charming architecture, this quaint town offers a perfect blend of tradition and modernity.
How to Get There
You can rent a car or take the bus, but we find travelling by train in Europe to be the least stressful way of getting from place to place. From Munich Central Station, Bad Tölz is an hour train ride, with trains running approximately every half hour. Bad Tölz’ train station is an approximate 15-minute walk from Marktstrasse, and while there is no Uber, there are taxis available.
Join us as we share our experience of the unique attractions that make Bad Tölz a must-visit destination.
Historical Old Town
Bad Tölz boasts a beautifully preserved medieval Old Town, where cobblestone streets wind through a maze of colorful facades and historic buildings. The iconic Market Street (Marktstrasse) where we stayed, was lined with traditional Bavarian shops, inviting cafes, and unique boutiques. As you stroll through this charming area, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time, with every corner revealing a piece of the town’s rich history.
River Isar and Spa Gardens
The town is embraced by the meandering River Isar, providing a serene backdrop for leisurely walks and outdoor activities. The Spa Gardens (Kurpark) along the riverbanks offer a tranquil escape, with manicured lawns, blooming flowerbeds, and scenic views of the surrounding Alps. Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll or enjoying a peaceful picnic, the River Isar and Spa Gardens provide a perfect setting to unwind and connect with nature.
Alpamare Water Park
For those seeking a splash of excitement, Bad Tölz is home to the renowned Alpamare Water Park which is open in the summers. We were told that this aquatic paradise features thrilling water slides, relaxing thermal baths, and a variety of pools for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or simply looking to unwind, you may want to check out Alpamare.
Kalvarienbergkirche and Assumption of Mary
Perched atop the Kalvarienberg hill, this Baroque-style church is a visual masterpiece, with its distinctive yellow facade and intricately adorned interiors. Dating back to the 18th century, the Kalvarienbergkirche captivates visitors with its ornate altars, impressive frescoes, and a serene atmosphere that invites contemplation. The church is not only a place of worship but also a cultural treasure, providing a glimpse into the region’s rich history and artistic heritage.
The walk up the hill is about 500 meters from Marktstrasse with stairs leading to the path found off Säggasse. When you reach the top, you are rewarded with a scenic view of the town and river below and the Alps in the distance, making the walk up hill well worth it. At the top, there are walking paths where you’ll find many locals going for a stroll or sitting on the park benches taking in the view. (Note that the steps and path are not especially difficult although it is a bit of a climb.)
The Assumption of Mary Church (Mariae Himmelfahrt) also in Bad Tölz, is a radiant example of Gothic architecture and a spiritual cornerstone within the community. Dating back to the 15th century, the church is a compelling blend of historical significance and aesthetic beauty. Its striking spire dominates the skyline, drawing both locals and visitors to its welcoming embrace. Inside, the Assumption of Mary Church features exquisite stained-glass windows, intricately carved altars, and a serene ambiance that invites contemplation. Take a moment to step inside and admire the intricate details of these centuries-old churches.
This church is found mere steps from Marktstrasse and since we were here a week before Christmas, we were treated to a wonderful Christmas concert.
Culinary Delights
In the summer you can indulge in the local Bavarian cuisine at one of Bad Tölz’s traditional beer gardens or cozy restaurants in the winter months. Savor hearty dishes such as schnitzel, pretzels, and weißwurst (a traditional German sausage), accompanied by a refreshing local beer. There are also Italian restaurants, and we found a delicious Thai restaurant on Marktstrasse, so there is something for everyone.
