Arriving in Füssen, Germany, felt like stepping into a fairytale. Nestled in the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border, this charming town was the perfect gateway to some of the most magical sights in the region. We took the train from Munich, which is only about 92 km away, a scenic two-hour journey that gave us breathtaking views of rolling hills, deep forests, and distant mountain peaks. Augsburg, Germany is also only about 90 km from Füssen as well Innsbruck, Austria is a mere 108 km from Füssen.
The highlight of our visit was, of course, Neuschwanstein Castle. As we made our way up the winding path, the sight of its soaring white towers emerging before us was absolutely mesmerizing. Inside, the lavish, dreamlike interiors, inspired by Wagnerian operas, left us speechless. It was easy to see why Neuschwanstein is often called the real-life inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella Castle.

Just a short distance away, we explored Hohenschwangau Castle, a beautiful yellow palace that was King Ludwig II’s childhood home. The contrast between the two castles—one a cozy royal residence, the other a fantastical masterpiece—made for an interesting glimpse into Bavarian history.

Back in Füssen’s Old Town, we wandered through cobbled streets lined with colorful buildings, stopping by St. Mang’s Abbey, a stunning Baroque monastery.

The atmosphere was peaceful, and the views from the nearby Lech River were simply stunning, with its turquoise waters flowing beneath the town’s historic bridges.

In summer, Füssen’s restaurants and beer gardens come alive, offering delicious Bavarian cuisine with stunning views of the Alps. We enjoyed hearty dishes like schnitzel and käsespätzle at cozy, traditional inns, while lively beer gardens served refreshing local brews under the warm evening sky. Street musicians and outdoor concerts in the Old Town created a magical atmosphere, making every night feel like a celebration of food, music, and Bavarian charm.Overnighting it in Füssen felt like a perfect blend of history, nature, and fairytale charm. As we boarded our train back to Munich, we couldn’t help but feel that this magical little town had given us memories to last a lifetime.
