The Iconic Jewel of the Amalfi Coast
Arriving in Positano, we immediately understood why it’s one of the most iconic and picturesque towns on the Amalfi Coast. With colorful houses cascading down the cliffs, narrow winding streets, and breathtaking views of the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea, it looked like something straight out of a postcard. It’s no surprise that Positano has long been a favorite destination for artists, writers, and celebrities.
Positano has an interesting history. It was once a humble fishing village, but over the years, it transformed into a luxurious and sought-after travel destination. Today, it’s known for its high-end boutiques, stylish hotels, and stunning beaches—but that also means it comes with a hefty price tag. From accommodations to dining, Positano is one of the most expensive places on the Amalfi Coast, but the beauty and atmosphere make it worth every euro.
One of the first things we did was stroll down the narrow, winding streets lined with boutiques, art galleries, and charming cafés. Positano is famous for its handmade leather sandals, linen clothing, and ceramics, and we couldn’t resist picking up a few souvenirs. As we made our way downhill, we finally reached Spiaggia Grande, the town’s most famous beach. With its backdrop of colorful cliffside houses and crystal-clear water, it was the perfect spot to soak in the beauty of Positano.
For an even more breathtaking view, we hiked part of the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei), a trail that offers stunning panoramic views of the coastline. The hike itself wasn’t too difficult, and the scenery was absolutely worth it. We also took a boat tour along the coast, giving us a different perspective of Positano’s dramatic cliffs and hidden sea caves.
Dining in Positano was another highlight. We enjoyed fresh seafood pasta, Neapolitan pizza, and limoncello, all while gazing out at the sea from a romantic terrace. Restaurants here can be pricey, but the experience of dining with such a spectacular view is unforgettable.
To fully experience Positano, we recommend spending at least a full day and if possible overnight it there, but if budget allows, staying overnight is magical. Watching the sunset from the beach and seeing the town’s lights twinkle against the cliffs at night was simply breathtaking. Positano may be expensive, but with its beauty, charm, and incredible atmosphere, it’s worth every moment.
