The Gateway to Cinque Terre

As we stepped off the train and into Riomaggiore, we immediately felt the charm of this seaside village, the southernmost and first stop of Cinque Terre. The buildings, painted in warm shades of red, yellow, and orange, clung to the steep hillsides, creating a stunning contrast against the deep blue of the Ligurian Sea. Narrow, winding streets led us past small cafes, seafood trattorias, and artisan shops, each offering a glimpse into the village’s history and daily life.

Riomaggiore, dating back to the 13th century, was originally a fishing village and remains one of the most authentic in the region. The tiny harbor, tucked between dramatic cliffs, was filled with colorful wooden boats known as gozzi, a reminder of the town’s seafaring roots. We watched as fishermen hauled in their daily catch, while others sat by the water, mending their nets.

One of the highlights of our visit was hiking up to Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montenero, a historic sanctuary perched high above the village. The uphill trek was challenging, but the breathtaking panoramic views over the entire Cinque Terre coastline made it completely worthwhile. For those looking for a less strenuous way to admire the views, walking along the Via dell’Amore (Path of Love), which connects Riomaggiore to Manarola, is an iconic experience—though parts of the trail were closed during our visit.

As the sun began to set, we made our way down to Marina di Riomaggiore, the village’s picturesque waterfront, where locals and visitors gathered to watch the sun sink into the horizon. We sat on the rocky cliffs, enjoying a glass of local white wine, savoring the perfect blend of salty sea air and the village’s peaceful atmosphere.

How Much Time Do You Need?
While Riomaggiore is small enough to explore in half a day, we could have easily spent a full day enjoying the stunning views, fresh seafood, and charming streets. As night fell, the colorful buildings lit up, their reflections shimmering on the water, making us realize why Riomaggiore is one of the most romantic and captivating villages in Cinque Terre.
