Hawaiians, and most fortunately for us, were compelled to leave a lasting legacy of themselves to the ages. At just about the 15-mile marker at the Holei Pali Lookout you’ll see a great view of the mountain lava flows and the sheer volume of it. Just past the 16-mile marker you’ll find the Pu’u Loa Petroglyph Trail. It’s a fairly easy 20-30 minute walk that leads you to an area studded with thousands of petroglyphs, or rock cravings, representing everything from birth to death. These are thought to be the largest petroglyph field in the state and well worth the visit.
