Ha Long Bay & Lan Ha Bay, Vietnam: A Refined 3-Day Luxury Cruise Through Northern Vietnam
Traveling from Hanoi to the spectacular limestone seascapes of Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay remains one of the most unforgettable experiences in northern Vietnam. After several days exploring Hanoi’s Old Quarter, we departed early in the morning and enjoyed a scenic 2.5-hour drive through the fertile landscapes of the Red River Delta enroute to Lot 32 at Tuan Chau Marina. The transition from Hanoi’s busy streets to the tranquil emerald waters of the bay created the perfect introduction to one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic cruising destinations.

For seasoned travelers seeking privacy, comfort, and immersive scenery, we selected the 5-star Orchid Cruises 3-day-2-night luxury experience. This premium cruise option offered a quieter and more refined itinerary focused heavily on Lan Ha Bay rather than the busier central sections of Halong Bay. While the Halong Bay UNESCO site is globally famous for its towering limestone karsts and dramatic caves, Lan Ha Bay provided a noticeably calmer and more intimate atmosphere with fewer cruise vessels and more opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and quiet relaxation.
Cruising Through Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay
A More Exclusive Side of Vietnam’s Most Famous Seascape
The beauty of Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay is difficult to fully capture in photographs. Thousands of limestone islands rise dramatically from calm jade-colored water, creating one of the most visually striking landscapes in Asia. Although Halong Bay receives the majority of international attention, we found Lan Ha Bay particularly appealing because of its quieter setting and more relaxed pace.

Early mornings aboard the cruise became some of our favorite moments of the journey. Watching the mist slowly lift over the limestone karsts while enjoying coffee on the sundeck created a peaceful atmosphere that felt worlds away from modern city life. During the spring and shoulder seasons, temperatures were comfortable and crowds noticeably lighter than during peak winter tourism months.
Luxury cruises such as Orchid Cruises generally range from approximately $550–$700 USD per person for a 3-day-2-night itinerary depending on cabin category, inclusions, and season. Suites with private balconies and panoramic bay views are especially worthwhile for travelers seeking a higher-end experience.
Exploring Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba Island
Geological Wonder and Historical Landmark
One of the most fascinating excursions during the cruise was our visit to Trung Trang Cave located on Cat Ba Island within Cat Ba National Park. Reaching the cave involved a short bus transfer through dense tropical forest landscapes before arriving at the entrance to this remarkable natural formation.

Stretching approximately 300 meters through the mountain, Trung Trang Cave is often referred to as a “through-cave” because visitors enter one side of the mountain and emerge through the other into lush jungle surroundings. Inside, the cave features impressive stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years. The dimly lit pathways and naturally sculpted rock formations created a dramatic and immersive atmosphere throughout the walk.
The cave also carries considerable historical significance. During the Vietnam War, portions of the cave were used as a naval base, and archaeological evidence suggests human habitation dating back roughly 6,000 years. It is also commonly known as “Bat Cave” due to the harmless bat populations residing inside.
The combination of geology, history, and rainforest scenery made this one of the most memorable individuals-friendly activities and sights to visit during our adventure travel Hanoi and northern Vietnam itinerary.
Swimming at Ba Trai Dao & Kayaking Ao Ech
The Hidden Beauty of Lan Ha Bay
A highlight of the cruise was entering the quieter waters around Ba Trai Dao (Three Peach Islets). Located near the southeastern side of Halong Bay close to Cat Ba Island, this pristine area offered secluded beaches, calm turquoise water, and dramatically fewer boats than the main Halong Bay routes.

Swimming here felt remarkably peaceful, surrounded entirely by limestone cliffs and untouched scenery. The water in Lan Ha Bay appeared exceptionally clean and calm, making it ideal for leisurely swims and kayaking excursions.
We also thoroughly enjoyed kayaking through Ao Ech (Frog Pond), one of the quieter corners of Lan Ha Bay known for its calm waters and hidden lagoons. Paddling through narrow channels beneath towering karsts allowed us to access areas unreachable by larger boats. Small caves, floating vegetation, and isolated rock formations revealed a far more intimate side of the bay compared to the larger cruise corridors.
For travelers who appreciate slow travel and immersive nature experiences, Ao Ech provided exactly the type of tranquil exploration that makes Lan Ha Bay increasingly attractive to discerning travelers.
Discovering Viet Hai Village
A Glimpse into Rural Northern Vietnam
Another rewarding excursion involved taking a tender boat ashore to visit Viet Hai Village. From the dock, we cycled along narrow village pathways surrounded by rainforest landscapes, rice fields, and limestone mountains.
The ride itself was relatively gentle and suitable for most fitness levels, allowing visitors to slowly absorb the scenery and observe everyday village life. Along the route, you’ll pass traditional homes constructed from bamboo, mud, and straw while local farmers tended fields in the surrounding valley.
Unlike the heavily touristed areas of Vietnam, Viet Hai Village still retains a peaceful rural character. The slower pace and friendly atmosphere offered a refreshing contrast to Hanoi’s urban energy and added valuable cultural depth to the overall journey.
Life Onboard Orchid Cruises
Relaxation Beyond the Excursions
One of the greatest advantages of choosing a longer 3-day-2-night itinerary was the opportunity to fully enjoy the ship itself. Between excursions, guests could indulge in spa treatments, cooking demonstrations, Tai Chi sessions on the sundeck, squid fishing, or simply relax while watching the scenery drift past.
We especially appreciated the private balcony attached to our suite, which quickly became one of our favorite places onboard. During the day, it provided a peaceful setting to quietly watch the towering limestone islands slowly emerge through the mist while traditional fishing boats and smaller cruise vessels passed silently across the emerald water. In the evenings, the balcony transformed into a tranquil retreat where we could unwind in complete privacy while the bay gradually illuminated beneath the night sky. Sitting together listening to the gentle movement of the water while the karst islands drifted by created some of the most memorable moments of the entire journey.
We also enjoyed spending time on the top deck with drinks from the bar as sunset settled across Lan Ha Bay. The silence over the water after dark created a level of calm and disconnection from daily life that is increasingly rare in today’s fast-paced travel environment.
For travelers considering accommodations before or after the cruise in Hanoi, highly rated mid-to-high range options include:
- InterContinental Hanoi Westlake
- Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
- Capella Hanoi
The best times to visit northern Vietnam and the bays are generally during spring (March to April) and autumn (September to November) when temperatures are more comfortable and visibility is often clearer. Summer months can bring intense heat, humidity, and occasional storms, though they also create beautifully lush green scenery across the bays.
As international requirements can change, travelers should always verify current visa regulations, cruise policies, weather conditions, and health requirements through official government and tourism sources before departure.
