Visiting Tossa de Mar, a coastal gem on Spain’s Costa Brava, felt like stepping into a postcard — where golden beaches, turquoise waters, and medieval stone walls blend seamlessly into one breathtaking view. Located about 100 kilometers northeast of Barcelona, it’s easily accessible in under two hours by car or bus, and un about 1 ½ hours by train making it a perfect day trip or weekend escape from the Catalonian capital. As we approached, the silhouette of the Vila Vella, Tossa’s walled old town, appeared dramatically against the sea, instantly capturing our imagination.
Tossa de Mar’s history dates back to the Roman era, but it’s the 14th-century medieval fortress that gives the town its distinct character. Wandering through the cobbled streets of the old town, enclosed by ancient stone walls and towers, we were transported to another time. From the Vila Vella’s ramparts, the panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline were simply mesmerizing — fishing boats dotting the glittering sea, cliffs cascading into secluded coves, and the soft hum of beach life below.
Down by the shore, Platja Gran, the main beach, offered a perfect balance of relaxation and energy. We spent time soaking in the sun, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and later strolling the Passeig del Mar, a scenic promenade lined with cafés and seafood restaurants. The grilled sardines and fresh paella we enjoyed at a beachside terrace were unforgettable, paired with a crisp Catalan white wine as we watched the waves roll in.
Beyond the beaches, Tossa’s Museu Municipal inside the old town offered a glimpse into its cultural legacy, including works by Marc Chagall, who famously called Tossa “the blue paradise.” It’s easy to see why — the combination of natural beauty and old-world charm creates an atmosphere both romantic and serene.
For us, two to three days in Tossa de Mar felt ideal — enough time to explore its historical corners, relax on the beaches, and take a short hike along the Camí de Ronda, the coastal trail connecting nearby coves with breathtaking views. Whether arriving from Barcelona or Girona, Tossa de Mar offers that perfect Mediterranean escape — small, scenic, and timeless, where every corner whispers a piece of Catalonia’s coastal soul.
